Bob Meistrell, co-founder of Body Glove and co-owner of Dive and Surf, passed away on June 16, 2013, at the age of 84.
Bob was well known in the South Bay for his love of surfing, diving and spending time in and on the water. Bob’s motto was “Do what you love and love what you do.” He died doing what he loved, spending time with his family, on board his boat, while in Catalina for a paddleboard race.
As the co-founder of Body Glove along with his twin brother Bill, Bob was an innovator, a visionary and a legend. Those who knew him loved him for his kind spirit, his captivating personality, and his generous nature. After Bob lost his brother Bill in 2006, he took Bill’s ashes aboard his boat and set out to scatter them at sea. Later, he would do the same for others in a beautiful ceremony which included roses Bob picked from his own garden. But instead of charging the families for his services, he asked that they make a donation to his favorite charity — Switzer Learning Center.
Bob had a love and a commitment to the Switzer Learning Center that we will forever cherish, and his donations we numerous, from serving on Switzer’s Board of Trustees, to attending events including graduation and fundraisers. When his wife Patty was honored as one of Switzer’s Women of the Year, Bob was beyond proud. And Bob was always happy to donate a cruise aboard the Disappearance as an auction item, including lunch and drinks, and skippered by Bob himself.
Bob valued education and character.
Do what you love and love what you do.
He donated hundreds of DVD’s to schools including Switzer, with stories depicting inspirational character traits. On his frequent visits to Switzer, and on the numerous trips he sponsored for Switzer students aboard his boat, he often asked our students which of the stories was their favorite. He was always so impressed with their responses. Therefore, in Bob’s honor, Switzer Learning Center will be creating a Bob Meistrell Memorial Character Walk, to include stepping stones designed and built by Switzer students, depicting those character traits that Bob so encouraged and emulated. Any donations of construction materials, durable artistic elements to embed in the stepping stones, or money to create these character stepping stones will be greatly appreciated.
On June 20, 2013, we awarded a $500 Bob Meistrell Memorial Inspirational Values Scholarship to our graduate Courtney who best exemplified Bob’s values and character. BodyGlove is directing people to make Bob Meistrell memorial tribute gifts to Switzer Learning Center to help fund an annual Bob Meistrell Memorial Inspirational Values Scholarship so that Bob’s inspirational legacy continues. We hope you will invest in encouraging building inspirational values in Bob’s memory.
Bob Meistrell was a man of great character, a kind and generous soul and a true friend, and we will miss him dearly. We love you Bob!
